Baby Wayne

Baby Wayne

Baby Wayne is now a Ten Year Old  Umbrella Cockatoo that came to us in 2007

The picture above is how she looks now on December 23rd 2009.

Baby Wayne is a female. We did not name her, she came to us with that name and trust me she knows it and likes you to know that she knows it

When collected her she was in a terrible state and was well on her way to having major plucking problems. She had her chest plucked bare and the rest of what few feathers she had were a huge mess. The best way to describe the remaining feathers would be to say,

" They looked like chewed up sticks coming out of her body".

Her prior owner told us that she was afraid of toys. Her cage was so slimy it was almost as if someone had put cooking oil into a spray bottle and sprayed BOTH the cage and her.

The room was dark with no lighting, only a small window about 15 feet away. Her cage had a water and food bowl inside it with a perch. That was it and how she lived.

I do not think that I mentioned the 6 dogs and at least 3 cats that were in the same room. They however did have outside access.

After her 2 hour ride home, we did something we have never done to any bird before as soon as they arrive and would never even consider it under normal circumstances.

We gave her a shower and from her reaction we think, (do not know), that it may have been the first shower she ever had.

We did was pressure wash her cage with no luck, we just could not get the grease or oil off it. The next stop for it was the trash.

I could go on, but I think that you can get the picture.

Now for the GOOD news

We have had Baby Wayne since 2007.

Baby Wayne has not plucked a feather since her arrival with us and is now looking as  beautiful as all cared for Cockatoo's do.

She loves her toys and her new cage. She gets to spend most of the day out of her cage and chooses to sit on top of it or on a play stand for the best part and watch the world go by while she munches on her toys and takes her little naps. When she gets tired of one, she climbs down and moves to the next one or if we are sitting down she waddles across the room and waits for one of us to put our feet out so that she can step up and have an elevator ride to our level. It is so cute to see. If either of our dogs are in the way and do not move, she will climb right over them. She is so, so, content with life.
She is a very sweet and loving bird and likes just about every one including children, she also likes our dogs. Although, if there is a man around, that is where she would normally prefer to be. Every evening she sits with the two of us on the couch and most of the time has no particular preference as to which one of us that she visits with as she walks back & forth between us to see who she is going to get the most attention & snuggles from. She does however have to have her last 10 or 15 minutes before bed time with current Dad. Why? I do not know, but she insists on it.

There have only been two people in three years that Baby Wayne has taken a disliking to. The only thing that we can come up with is that: They both have long & painted finger nails.
I know that this might sound strange but who knows what goes through thier minds and what really happened prior to her landing with us.

The prior owner did tell us that they got Baby Wayne from an older lady that could not cope with her. Her husband had passed away. Maybe there is a reason in there, maybe not. We simply do not know.

Is it possible that baby Wayne was the husbands bird and wife did not like her ?

We will never know and Baby Wayne is not telling.

Remember:

Mistreat a bird and it will never forget.

Baby Wayne had more than just plucking problems, she was also suffering from malnutrition which led to getting egg-bound. We came very close to loosing her. Our avian vet was so concerned that she would not make it, he called us 3 times a day for 4 days including the weekend until we knew she was "out of the woods".

We are always very selective about our adoptive parents. Baby Wayne is ready for adoption, but will remain a resident bird for however long it takes until the perfect loving parents come along.

If you would like to adopt Baby Wayne and can provide a "Forever Home" for her. We would love to hear from you. By "Forever". We really do mean "Forever".
